I met Earl Lloyd at this past weekend’s Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament in Charlotte N.C. I generally don’t talk to dudes in the bathroom unless I know them but I remember Mr. Lloyd from TV. Actually it was from an excellent documentary called Black Magic. He was washing his hands so we gave each other an elbow bump. I kept getting the information wrong about him (his college, his professional team) but he could tell that I did watch the video. Mr. Lloyd was one of the first African Americans (or whatever they are calling us this week) to play in the National Basketball Association. The great thing about meeting him was that he wasn’t stuck up. He was extremely friendly in our brief encounter. Lloyd and others like him paved the way for the current NBA players. Meeting him made me think about the rich Legacy that black folks have. If current NBA players, only knew what their predecessors had to go through for them to play in the league now. And if Historically Black Colleges and University alumni, only knew of the rich athletic heritage that came from their schools.
