This news will hopefully inspire Apple to make the next generation iPods even more amazing. However, I don't see MS as the biggest threat to the iPod. I am much more concerned about mp3 cellphones with 4Gb flash (see e.g. SonyEricsson).

The "private" beta that's being circulated is a very old beta in the development stage. VMware has big plans, and is working closely with Apple to have a true Mac look and feel.
Things VMware Final version will do:
Be 100% Free
Support Adjusting how many processors you use.
64bit support and optimization
Drag and drop into the VM window (just try dragging a file off your desktop into the VM now)
***And full support to use your bootcamp volume. So you don't have to have two disks anymore or one for Virtual Machine, and another for bootcamp with full video accelerations. You can just run your bootcamp volume right inside of VMware for those times when you don't want to reboot, and just need to do work. That way you only have one copy of windows on your machine! Something just happened in the stats, we got a big jump and many teams too. Yet I don't think this is the whole catch up as we still miss points as a team and I still miss a big unit...

My recollection is that Word for Windows doesn't have it either. I have no way to verify that right now, though, since I don't have a Windows computer here on the premises.
Word XP & 2003 for Windows have a "book fold" option - not the same as the process that lifeofart was describing, which is more like something I've used in MS Publisher 2000.

I've been told the keyboard backlighting was a size issue. Doesn't anyone remember that they made it thinner and increased the battery size? It probably doesn't fit. I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape on this. I've had both backlight and non-backlight.

Apple leveraged iPods to sell iTMS, and iPods to sell Macs, but Microsoft can use MediaPlayer/Vista/Urge to push its WMA players. Controlling 90%+ of the world's desktops with XP and soon with Vista, they have an opportunity to push the iPod and iTMS right off the map. It already seems well on its way to happening with movie downloads.
I am not saying that MS will do any of the above, but they are sure well positioned to do so. If Vista manages to successfully push people to register their credit cards at Urge, and WMA playback capability becomes a must-have feature, Apple will have a lot of trouble on their hands.
Say a prayer that Jobs manages to not only deliver must-have sexy devices, but that he makes iTunes a whole lot more impressive for Mac and especially for Windows so that people won't even want to use Media Player. If people adopt the new Media Player 11, and quietly infect the world with WMA/WVA media, watch out. In truth, the player doesn't have to be that good. It just has to play the media that people actually have. Hence their rumoured willingness to swap protected AACs for WMAs. That along with OS dominance is where the danger to iPod/ITMS exists.

Thanks for the chart...I always like to see stuff like this. But your 3Q and 4Q numbers for 2003 and 2004 looked a bit fishy, so I looked into it and made the corrections below for 2004. Don't know if there are any other errors.
2000 was right after the original iMacs were released, wasn't it? It's interesting that it has taken five or so years to reach the same numbers again. Then again, there were a couple times when the only improvement to the PowerMacs was a 100-300 MHz G4 speed bump... :rolleyes:
I remember Apple's colossal market share in the early to mid 1980s, back then it was pretty much given that developers had to make a DOS/Windows and MacOS version of their programs. I think the Universal Binary was brilliant - it keeps G3/G4/G5 users in the loop while moving OS X compatible software forward. Hopefully as more developers take note of Apple's slowly growing market share (come on 5%!) everyone will experience more cross-platform goodness.:D

The theoretical never actually happen though. That's why I'd take a superior network standard with a lower frequency, and thus better building penetration, any day.

Spring-loaded folders in the dock. So you can drag a file onto a folder in the dock and have it spring open - like in the Finder.
Actually you can already do this - I have my documents, applications and photos folders on the dock and they spring open etc...Excellent feature by the way. I think all they are really doing is giving you the ability to control how long you have to wait before they spring.....

Apple has never used extreme edition processors. It's outside the scope of their market (aside from beyond their TDP).
However, that's immaterial to the overall point. You tried to claim that apple skimps on some products, therefore them skimping on LTE because they can makes sense. That's no longer the case, Apple does use mobile quad core processors, so your claim no longer has any basis.

When I first got my MBP, I think the software was not Universal, but they made it UB shortly afterwards, so I was using programmed buttons in no time. It really is easier than ctrl-click though sometimes I still do that out of recently developed instinct :)

Looks very un-Apple to me. Yeah, same basic resemblance but I don't see the iPhone looking like that. I agree with previous posters, impossible hands-free talking without a headset. Why wouldn't they do away with a home button and make touch screen extend down further and have the full width be an area for gestures rather than that confined area shown in the horrible mock-up. Or better yet, enable the entire screen to recognize specific gestures as we've already been doing for years in apps themselves? And even like side-swipe to change to the next page of apps. Just brainstorming.

-- predicted in 2005 "Apple is prepping Macs to serve as a hub for digital media for consumers by incorporating Tivo-like DVR capabilities"
-- Has missed numerous financial estimates by large margins.
To be fair, Munster is better than most "professional" analysts, he does a bit more research and has a decent track record on certain details. But I'm just saying, don't put much "stock" into this.

Top end 27" iMac = US$1999, or in the Australian Store, AUD$2299 which at the current exchange rate is about US$2500. Why should we pay more, Apple? If anything, we're closer to China so should pay less on shipping!
Whilst it's slightly better than yesterdays prices, I'm still seriously not happy.
I'd buy one if we got the USA prices.

If you're anything like the UK there may be additional import taxes to pay and the cost of doing business is likely to be higher (everything from shipping costs to salaries affect the price you pay at the checkout). Add in a margain that Apple will calculate to protect themselves from changes in the exchange rate and you'll probably be very close to price parity. Just as in the UK you're paying extra for the product because of the country, not because of Apple.
That's not to say Apple DON'T screw up on exchange rates and gouge the heck out of us non-Americans of course. The Mac Mini being the most recent, and painful, example. But you need to make sure you compare like for like before complaining.
