Is Cam Newton a Good #1 Pick?

The NFL Draft is currently underway.  The super overblown spectacle that has become each team's individual pick has been completely analyzed to death, and it's time to actually make the decisions.  The big one is obviously the number 1 overall pick for the Carolina Panthers.  It has been suspected for a long time that they would pick Heisman Trophy Winner and National Champion Cam Newton out of Auburn.  The resume is indisputable, what is disputable it the skill set.

Over the last several years, the NFL has become completely quarterback driven.  Running backs, wide receivers etc are all taking a back seat.  If you don't have a dominant quarterback, you're sunk.  The one thing that all of the elite quarterbacks have in common is their accuracy throwing the ball.  Think Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.  You can also throw in Aaron Rodgers, and Drew Brees.  And this is why there are questions surrounding this pick.

You can't fault the Panthers for looking for a star with potential.  But this pick has a tremendous capacity to be flop as well as a hit.  Cam Newton cannot throw accurately.  It's as simple as that.  In college he could bail himself out by running around or through defenders.  He's big enough and athletic enough to do both.  But that isn't enough for a quarterback in the NFL.  Even Michael Vick had develop a great passing game.

So the question is, can Cam Newton develop a passing game good enough to complement his athletic ability to become a star quarterback, or will he end up being a mediocre starter for his entire career?

What do you think?
