BYU's Honor Code and It's Sports

So the big debate these past few days has been about BYU's honor code and the dismissal of Brandon Davies from the BYU Basketball Team.  People are saying that it is completely unrealistic to expect college students to live up to these standards.  Others are saying you can't compete for a title in any sport if you require your athletes to follow the honor code.  I love this video on ESPN First Take which discusses exactly these topics.

ESPN First Take & BYU Honor Code

Sorry I can't post the video itself, it's on the ESPN channel so I can't upload it.

I normally don't agree with Skip Bayless, but he and Chris Broussard (both of whom have no connection to BYU) make great points.  BYU isn't necessarily always challenging the top teams in NCAA sports, but they have proven in the past that it is possible.  And the honor code has always been there.

Personally I find it amazing that any student or athlete at BYU could feign ignorance about the Honor Code.  That being said, we've found that many an athlete and student can be ignorant and break the Honor Code.  And apparently that is exactly the case with Brandon Davies.  Did he think that maybe they wouldn't find out?  Did he not consider the other players on the team, and the potential for an unprecedented season?  Or maybe like so many other people, he had a moment of weakness and decided for his own personal benefit, it was best to turn himself in.  It's hard to say what happened because BYU will not come out with any specifics, not should they.  But one thing is for sure, there is no tolerance for breaking the Honor Code, and I'm grateful that no one has ever been above those rules.
