I love twitter. Because of twitter, I follow many random people I would have never thought of listening to otherwise, and I listen to what they have to say about 90% of the time. Also due to twitter, I have many links to click on so that I can procrastinate further on the many assignments and projects that are eating my life.

Today I clicked on a link that brought me to Deepak Chopra's Buddha. I looked at the gorgeous illustrations and was fascinated. There are comics about everything. And why not? I spent a whole thesis dedicated to why the sequential art genre is amazingly effective at displaying narrative. It is of absolutely no surprise to me that many books are being adapted into the graphic novel format. It is a completely different, yet valid way of portraying a story.

One person I follow on twitter, who is in fact one of my favourite people to follow, is Paulo Coelho, one of my most beloved authors. I found out through twitter that The Alchemist, a book I consider to be one of the best out there, is also out as a graphic novel. I'm ordering a copy as soon as I finish this post. When I heard of the news, I was so damn excited and thrilled that this existed. I cannot wait to see how this will work! Will I feel the magic I felt when I read the book? How will my gaze and the sequence of images change my emotional reaction to the events of the story? Will the still images and speech bubbles of the storyboard evoke the same questions and thoughts that the sentences did?

I have to admit, like with any other person who is a fan of something that is very close to them, I am worried about beloved books translating to comics. It's like the book-to-movie transition - can it really work? What do they have to cut out? What will have to be added? How will the appearance of characters and settings match with my imagination?

However, I need to say that this isn't a book-to-movie transition at all. There are fundamental differences that make book-to-comics way more appealing to me than book-to-movie.

First of all, there is the lack of Hollywood. Oh my God, Hollywood! How you have destroyed many, many good narratives and characters! Look at that stupid Red Riding Hood movie that is coming out, for example. Pathetic. It is usually due to the Hollywoodisation of books that we are either bored to tears (those movies are usually better) or angry due to the complete distortion of canon (those movies are usually so much worse).

Sometimes, Hollywood can get it right. This is when the changes are subtle but necessary, the acting and screenwriting is superb, and most importantly, what I like to call the soul of the movie is unchanged. We are involved with the same characters we loved in text and the tone is perfect, matching that of the author and narrator. I like to think that The Color Purple and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest are good examples of this. However, most of the time these adaptations are just dreadful. Lots of money is spent on making a lot more money out of people like us.

Graphic novels, comics, whatever you want to call them do not have the pressure of Hollywood. From my own experience, they come in so many varieties that there is not need to glamourise the story at all. People who read comics tend to love books too, so while certain conventions do apply, the content of graphics do not need to differ greatly from that of a novel. Us book lovers are generally expecting the same things.

Obviously, the fact that there are images accompanying text (and some comics have no text at all) makes the type of narration dependent on different things. Therefore, the story will not be told the same way. This is a given. However, I feel that the medium can relate the story's "soul" more effectively because novels and comics are both forms of book arts. They involve the reader in a way that is similar to each other. Film and comics have something in common too, in terms of the movement of images - aren't strips reminiscent of film stills? I think so, at least. However, like with books, the reader controls the speed and movement of comics, whereas films are moved for you. It's a huge divergence.

Having said all of this, I need to note (so that I may remain honest with you all) that I view all three media with equal reverence. Actually, in order to be really honest, I need to use the word love. I love novels, comics, and film with all of my heart. There is something about narrative that means so much to me and all three of these art forms are effective in their own way. I like to view them as separate from one another and yet I cannot help but see them as extremely intertwined. Like life, it is complicated.

I wonder if I will be able to separate the novel from the graphic when I finally receive The Alchemist in the mail. Maybe the only way for me to enjoy the comic is to see it as its own thing, and let my eyes be led across the page. It is a narrative I know, but now it's time for me to see it differently.

At least the "different" way for me to re-experience The Alchemist isn't through some shitty Hollywood adaptation. Thank the LORD.

The Flat: The return of Kushka

Had a long day. Nothing more to say there. I'm chilling here with Kushka

Was planning on having a lovely girly night in with films and chocolate, but my friend's flat got flooded. Yes, that is how much it was raining last night. She lives on the 4th floor of her building. I hasten to add that the whole building wasn't flooded, there was just a blockage in the drain on her balcony and so the water ran into the flat. Still not a good thing though.

So I am back in the Canadian/American/UK flat, where one of my friends lives, close to school. She's letting me stay the night, kindly. I'm really unreasonably excited, because it's so much fun being away from home. Which is bad, obviously, because I should be enjoying my time at home, but sometimes you just need the release of ridiculous times with the English.

Kushka is the dog. She likes eating toes. Nuff said. No more posts for today.

Transportation Security Administration officials want you to wear clean underwear!! That’s probably the next sign you will see at the airport next year. Because the Government has authorized scanners and body searches, in order to protect the unfriendly skies, you have a citizenship that is uneasy. Poor President Obama, another thing under his watch that people don’t like. Good thing the Car Company Bailouts are working out for him. Oh, I forgot, they aren’t giving him credit for that. Anyway, I knew we would eventually get to this point. The Terrorist must be laughing at us. They have us so afraid of dying on an airplane. We will let complete strangers touch our naked bodies searching for weapons we know we don’t have.

I know I know…this is where you tell me, “what about those “Brown Skin Terrorists!!!”” Not to be confused with those “Pale Skin Terrorists” that have been terrorizing Americans for years. Everyone in America, except for minorities, loves racial profiling when it comes to safety. It’s easy to pick someone out of the crowd when they don’t look like you. I’m waiting for when we have to use retinal scans to determine our identity.

And the fact that The Obama Administration backpedaled away from him didn’t help either but I digress… It’s really strange that some conservatives are complaining about the TSA but they also say Obama isn’t making America safe enough. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she isn’t down with the searches. And she is a credible source on fondling because she is married to President Bill Clinton. I don’t think that Department of Homeland Security head Janet Napolitano has an honest opinion because she doesn’t have a clue. She was only hired because she’s from a state that borders a foreign country. When does the Mayor of Buffalo, New York get his shot at a government job??? Well, Thanksgiving has ended and it's recorded in the books. Let’s see what happens when people travel this Christmas.

Leslie Nielsen died Sunday afternoon in a Fort Lauterdale, Fla. hospital, according to msnbc.msn.com.

The 84-year-old Canadian actor was named an honorary West Virginian in February 2002 by Gov. Bob Wise. He made many visits to the Mountain State, including a 2004 trip to Marshall University in Huntington.

Leslie Nielsen's life as an actor was hard not to take seriously, no matter how spoof-laden his filmography. The man's ability to jump from comically somber to completely slapstick, and his host of memorable lines, scenes, and films, is a legacy that will carry long past his death at age 84.

In 2001, Nielsen visited Charleston to promote a series of educational games from Microsoft. He also appeared in some West Virginia Lottery advertisements.

Nielsen's best-known roles were in the 1980 film "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun" series of movies.

BABY BABY BABY.

I'm like any other just-post-adolescent girl...I adore tiny babies, and every time I see one, I want one. Such was the case this afternoon when I met 36hour old Leena, the brand new daughter of my new Moroccan cousin Youssef and his wife. She is absolutely gorgeous in every way.

However, I am well aware of the practicalities of babies, which has to put you off a little. I wouldn't want to be pregnant, I wouldn't want crying, and I certainly wouldn't want all of that in the middle of my degree program. No thanks. Another time maybe. For the Moroccans of course (the religious ones anyway) you have a baby once you get pregnant, which is probably fairly quickly after you get married because of the fact that contraception is not allowed in Islam (as in Catholicism).

Once the baby is born, things are different too. There were huge amounts of food and drink in the house when we got there, gifts because of the baby. Very little for the baby herself I noticed. Then it became clear. You need loads of sweets and cakes and things because the visitors are endless. I think that in the hour we were there, I probably met 50 or 60 new people. The flow of people was endless. And whereas we would spend all our time cooing over mother and child, they were probably the least popular people in the room. A hello from each person, and then down to the chatting. Apart from obligatory Islamic singing, they were left to themselves.

And the singing. Wow. Its nothing like nursery rhymes.

This is one of my personal favourite nursery rhymes, Skye Boat Song.

Ok, sorry, I lied. But seriously, this is Skye Boat Song. It's not really a nursery rhyme but my Mum used to sing it to me when I was small. It is truly lovely. Enjoy.

Today, it was windy. Windy like you wouldn't believe. Walking home, there were points where I thought I was going to get picked up and carried off into the trees. It was much scarier at school though. There is a sheltered area where we can sit, which is covered by some bamboo matting and then a rigid plastic sheet. The sheet became detached and was smacking up and down on the bamboo. It was really unnerving, and I probably got a little too close to the American I was sitting next to. He didn't flinch, but he wasn't far off it! Clearly I am repulsive. (I jest, no 'perky' e-mails telling me how beautiful I am please)

Katie gives her opinion that, “Her daughters were very small, Ellie of six years old and the younger one Carrie of two years old, when her husband died and thought of staying single unless she finds someone to marry someone and make a new family. She is happy with her life at the moment including her two little adorable daughters. However, she is still planning to marry though she is not giving much time to the thought.” She loves being independent and also wants her children to be the same.

Giving and Recieving

I am a giver. And I resent anyone who took that in any way other than a nice and tasteful one. And on the theme of giving, you should give some money to charity. HERE

Also, I really like giving things to people, and doing things for people.

This is particularly noticeable on my Christmas List this year. When most people use the phrase 'Christmas List' they mean a list of things which they've picked out for themselves, but I always use it for the list of things I have decided to get for other people. This year my list is 68 items long. 70+ if you consider that for certain people I'm getting more than one thing. I feel like being here is the perfect opportunity to get really good value for my money on very individual gift items, which means that people who wouldn't normally get a gift from me will. And I love that idea.

I love cooking for my friends, doing the dishes and giving people lifts. I basically enjoy anything which is for someone other than myself. I used to work in a supermarket, and I worked customer-services. I've never been better at anything in my life. When I am all grown up, I'd like to work for a charity. I think giving is one of the best things ever. Even though this definitely sounds like me blowing my own trumpet.

It was, nothing.Then again, it's nothing, again.Hi everybody.It's been 17 days.I feel empty till now.It was nothing,Then pain, agony, misery,Then anger then frustrations then craziness.Now, it's numbed, and nothing, again.Lol.Ohwell.Idk what I did the past 2 weeks and 2 days.I mostly stayed in, or nua.Or go down west side meet Arhjas arkaliao and co.Okay.19th, morning went over holland meet aj and darren at 10am?Slacked and stuffs.Alibaba then went back east on train with aj d ahdi gera peiqi.I went home, alibaba, slept.Cuz didn't sleep hahaha, was mapling LOL.Next day, went over coasta sands meet aj gera ahdi darren peiqi.Went wildwildwet at 1pm.Left at around 3.Stayed at chalet until 12plus 1am.Then bee came over fetch me, then walk out cabbed home with her.Chalet was fun.But I was tiredddd. lol.Hurrr, then next morning went over pasir ris in the morning.To pass aj her wallet that she left with me then went home.Lol.Following 2 days, met them at holland.23rd,I got really angry lol.Weewee sis made me fucking pekcek by dragging time t.tHalfway last min decided to go tiong meet weewee and susu at tiong.Thinking will go over holland together.End up I from 6pm wait until 8.30pm then cab over -.-Cuz sis want go bugis, then blablabla, wa pekcek lol.Days' been fine... Natalie Portman was not given Water to Drink !!!

Hot and sexy Israeli- American actress Natalie Portman has complained that, she was prevented from drinking water form a plastic bottle. And she was compelled to use an eco-container for that purpose, specially, when Natalie was at the shooting spot of her upcoming new movie ' Black Swan'.

Natalie also admitted that,Darren Aronofsky is an environment lover and he keeps supporting it all the time. In order to prove his love to the nature, he banned using any type of plastic bottles on the shooting spot. He thinks that, “it is now the proper time to show our sympathy to the nature “said Natalie.

Moreover, Natalie Portman said that, “as we keep our self busy in the shooting spot with dancing and acting so we need satisfactory amount of water which can keep us energetic. But the problem is that there was not single bottle water was found on the set, though we desperately need that on the spot. Instead of it we were given eco friendly containers for drinking purpose and also the chance to fill it up.

Recently, this hot actress admitted that, beauty can be a boring thing when you boy friend keep gazing at you all the time and keeps admiring you beauty. “I find it really disgusting when all the guys are so worried with my appearance, where I am not a worried at all”.
