In Massachusetts we already pay an excise tax on vehicles, boat and other toys.
Introducing a tax on road usage, not to remind you that we already pay taxes for this, would impact the ones that depend on such an infrastructure to support the economy.

The majority of the revenues that would feed the government waste would ultimately be passed on to everyone. Whether it be food, consumer goods, clothing and so on, it all requires some sort of usage of the infrastructure we are already paying for.

How about no new taxes and better manage the money we already feed into the garbage disposal.

x2 of what you said.... you verbalized what I was trying to say a lot better than I. :o

    Thanks! :)

I wish they included this but I guess it was more detailed then they were willing to broadcast.

After NewsToons was turned down in mid-December, Mr. Fiore did not try to submit it again, “mainly because it seemed like it would be so daunting.”

“It’s not like I had a phone number for someone at Apple,” he said, adding, “interestingly enough, I do now.”

Just goes to show how two-faced they are.. :(

Look, believe it or not I'm a big fan of Apple for the most part but the UGLY way they've handled the APP store was/is just too much for me to not speak my mind about it. Oh and before people start screaming... WELL YOU HAVE A CHOICE... Yea I'm well aware of my rights and freedoms and one of them is to LIKE Apple and their products and STILL speak the truth about their militant behavior they exhibit over the APP store.

And they're taught how to spell, too.

Unless & until you've been there (and it's obvious you haven't), you may want to temper that opinionthe right to publicly express same courtesy of the poor folks serving you are so condescendingly pitiful ofwith some factual knowledge. But that's the beauty of lifelong civilianhood, no need to live in the real world when there's some that do that for you.

    Carry on, shipwreck. ;)

Yeah because in the real world if I went into another country and carpet bombed a village I wouldn't be sent to jail. And the "until you've been there" argument is BS too. Do I need to first be a paedophile before denouncing paedophilia?

You really think that the civilians of Apple should involve themselves with an already extremely efficient killing machine? A homophobic, misogynistic one at that?

Loving the "latte" cliches, was wondering how long it would take for someone to come up with that.

That must mean I'm not normal. :D

If you're here, then probably not. These forums are filled with boring arguments discussions about pedantic little details that normal people usually don't give a crap about.

Penny is normal. Leonard and Sheldon are not, even if you can relate to them better (hopefully Leonard more than Sheldon).

Hasn't Apple always been known for producing systems usable by the Everyman? Whereas the ubermenschen were off using UNIX systems at first, followed by Linux, Apple computers have always appealed to those who wanted to pick up a computer and start working, without technology getting in the way, at least since the Macintosh...

Yes, but Apple's adoption of UNIX and open-source in Mac OS X via NeXT attracted the bermenschen in a manner not seen during the years before. And with its increasing maturity and acceptance, Mac OS X - and subsequently iOS - has continued to attract them and the illusion that those ber-geeky nickpicky details were the most important thing in the world.

Products - and not just Apple's but any technology - could be powered by hugs, rainbows and unicorn kisses running on a half-core processor and the normal person wouldn't care, as long as it's easy and enjoyable to use, and lets them do what they want to do without having to think about how or why it works the way it does. They don't care about the nuances of the definition of "Retina Display" or debate the conspiracies behind charging $0.99 for FaceTime (they'll either buy it or they won't). A computer is a toaster. They want to put bread in and get toast out.

It used to be that every computer was a box with a monitor attached. When iMac came out, people said "well it's all very nice, but my needs are special and I could never use an iMac. I still need a fully-loaded five-figure tower." Similarly, laptops were underpowered and people still used a desktop to get the "real work" done. iMac is now well and above its original base-model station, and the specs of laptops now make them desktop replacements, with laptop growth carving a big slice out of the desktop market. Likewise, while iPad and even iPad 2 are possibly not going to be all anyone will ever need, iPad 3, iPad 4 and so on will close the gap. But like iMac was back in the day, iPad is the right direction for the new segment - an appliance - and will evolve and mature.

Which cameras in particular. It already supports all the serious Pro cameras if you ignore the very recently announced Canon and Nikon amature DSLRs.

My brother is a photographer, and has a medium format mumiya camera with digital back

It supports his SLRS, but not his mumiya

So, he can't really use aperture.

I believe he was answering my question.

Ultimately where does all this research go? Who is benefitting from it all? I can't help but think that all this research will just enable some multi-billion dollar drug company to come up with some pill that they can patent and make billions of more dollars. I tried reading the faqs of Folding@home, but it does not really say where all this research is going. I am sure the scientists mean well with their research, but ultimately they will not be the ones creating the drugs to cure these diseases. Drug companies will be doing that, and they are strictly profit oriented.

per the FAQ on the F@H page...

Who "owns" the results? What will happen to them?

"Unlike other distributed computing projects, Folding@home is run by an academic institution (specifically the Pande Group, at Stanford University's - Chemistry Department), which is a nonprofit institution dedicated to science research and education. We will not sell the data or make any money off of it.

Moreover, we will make the data available for others to use. In particular, the results from Folding@home will be made available on several levels. Most importantly, analysis of the simulations will be submitted to scientific journals for publication, and these journal articles will be posted on the web page after publication. Next, after publication of these scientific articles that analyze the data, the raw data of the folding runs will be available for everyone, including other researchers, here on this web site."

it's open source science. everyone participates, everyone wins.

    2) My electricity prices are going up by about 10% so I really don't like the idea of my iMac running 24-7 eating up electricity, and adding to the wear and tear of my system. I'm not sure what the monthly cost would be running Folding@home, but I'm sure it adds up.

the cost of gasoline is up also, but i still drive my paper/plastic/glass to the city recycle point to keep it out of a landfill. i guess i don't get the point of the question. if you can afford the small increase in cost due to additional electrical usage, then fold. if not, don't.

no idea which system you have, but a quick guesstimate of a current imac running folding with the screen set to turn off when not being used would be around 100-120w, so like leaving a light bulb on. well, an old school incandescent bulb... you do have all LED and CFLs since you worry about electric rates, right?

if i had only an imac and a desire to fold, i'd leave the imac alone and build a cheap pc system to fold with. no wear and tear, better results, lower cost. just my 2 cents.

Right now in NYC you can walk in the Apple store anytime and get the Verizon iPad. ATT models are extremely hard to find.

So how is it that Verizon is preferred???... (I know why but I'll let you guess...:))

I wonder why everywhere I go ATT is sold out...

I was lucky enough to buy 16GB ATT this morning. :D

The survey is flawed if it's estimating US sales by polling only US buyers.

The survey is not a good indicator of initial US sales. Since the AT&T models are being snatched up and shipped overseas. The survey is asking US purchases which version they prefer. However, US citizens are not the only ones buying iPad 2 from Apple in the US. If the survey is accurate then over time (i.e.: as international iPad 2 availability increases) then the Verizon model should catch up to AT&T in the US and possibly pass it in sales.

I still prefer the nation's fastest network (AT&T) over the most reliable (VZW) any day. Not to mention my GSM 32GB iPad 1 can be used internationally as well. Besides, in my neck of the woods, AT&T service has been very reliable for data consumption. No complaints here.

I owned the AT&T iPad 1 and I am somebody who only buys the data plan when I am traveling for vacation or for work. In my home town, AT&T is awesome -- they have great coverage. However, last year when traveling I found that AT&T coverage was not so good. In Idaho and Utah I had terrible coverage, in New York City I had "four bars" but it was still dog slow (this is before their NYC upgrades), and in Southern California it was hit or miss. So I bought the Verizon iPad 2 64GB with the intention of sticking with AT&T for my next iPhone. That way if I get somewhere and my phone shows great AT&T coverage then I can go with the WiFi hotspot option. However, if the AT&T coverage is lacking at my destination then I can activate the Verizon plan on the iPad 2. Should give me the best of both worlds. Here's hoping AT&T gets their LTE network up and running sooner rather than later though.

I jumped on a month of Gold for $1.
That 1 dollar deal is a lie. They set your account to auto renew, and then charge you 8 bucks to renew your subscription. However, you can turn off auto renew and avoid the 8 buck monthly renewal fee.

Worst Apple ads ever. You attract more flies with sugar than vinegar, and Apple's all about the vinegar.

I strongly disagree. These ads are based on humor. Humor seems more like a sweet enticement than a sour one.

Oh, and by the way, it's honey, not sugar.

I'm not claiming to say that these ads have hurt or helped boost the market shares.

    Well, actually you are:

    Not because of these commercials.

That seems pretty much like your denying the possibility that they have helped, explicitly.

...I'm only saying that I have only heard negative things about them.

    I feel embarrassed watching them.

Well, you know, that's your experience and your issue. I find them funny. Everyone I know finds them funny. And that includes a number of PC users, including IT professionals. The only person who didn't quite let himself laugh openly about them is my dad, and he has a personal bias against Macs.

Wireless syncing is a lot easier and a lot less hassle. Charging the battery with an electrical outlet is the only time you need to plug your iPhone in anything, IMHO. I find syncing my iPhone to my computer to be a chore and I rarely do so because of this.

now a 2-month old PowerMac is already becoming obsolete.

I certainly hope you didn't buy a Power Mac two months ago, especially since Apple announced the intel switch over a year ago.

Classic was supported until what, last year essentially? And the G3 machines up until Leopard? ;)

The original G3's were only suppored through 10.2.

While I wish I could run this on my quad, it makes total sense. They're not "abandoning" anyone since this is a new app, and probably won't have a final version shipping for months. If they're expecting slow adoption of this anyway, why bother doing a version that people will be abandoning as fast as they are adopting?

While the intel only thing is a negative, I'm very happy to see any new audio apps appear that are alternatives to STP. Soundtrack Pro is a turd and has been since its release what, a year and a half ago? Apple needs to realize that shipping an app that is complete garbage is not acceptable.

I'd much rather run Sound Forge under parallels than use STP.

So many of the switchers are college kids. A few
months ago they had an article about how the
market share in college is really falling more toward
mac, more than ever before. Apple is getting them
young, and that will pay off in the long run. I got
my first Mac when I started college and now that
I finished, I got a new one. The new laptops have
made a huge dent in this age group, so that is what
a lot of this whole market share increase is caused by.

Who the hell wants this? This space is already filled.

Port Audition to the Mac already - I've been using it for years, and its literally one of two things i cant stick on my MacBook. (Editing in Parallels is foul, and Boot Camp is a waste of space on a 120 gig hard drive for a few applications.)

I couldn't agree more. I use Audition/Cool Edit Pro at work (radio production) and have yet to find a suitable replacement for it on the Mac. Soundbooth has very limited usability without being able to bounce tracks into an integrated multitrack.

What's sad is that when I saw all the audio apps available for the Mac I thought Audition level functionality would be easy to find. I couldn't have been more wrong. I have tried Soundtrack and Peak, and each are good in their own way, but neither fill the needs of a typical radio station production load. It is very frustrating to me. Ironically, I sent an e-mail to Adobe just the other day requesting that they port Audition...when I saw the headline about Soundbooth, I got really excited until I realized it was a port of Cool Edit 2000. Still, I downloaded it and will test it on my iMac.

    Please Adobe...give us Audition!

    I'm single. I need a sexy car, not a four door. :)

Why don't they just use existing standards? RTSP, H.264/MPEG4 video and bonjour. There. No licensing required.

    But no.

Apple pulls the "standards compliant" flag out of their asses only when it suits them. Boo.
